Best Haunted Attractions in Maine 2026: Fort Knox's Halloween Lineup Has Changed

Maine does Halloween differently from the rest of New England. There's no screampark arms race here — no forty-dollar timed-entry mazes in industrial units off the interstate. What Maine has is a Civil War-era granite fort on the Penobscot River and a series of events staged inside it.

Which makes the fort's 2026 calendar the whole story. And it has changed.

The Fright at the Fort question

Fright at the Fort is Maine's best-known Halloween attraction — a multi-night haunted tour through the fort's granite passages, run as a fundraiser for the site's preservation. Search for it today and you'll find pages confidently listing five October nights.

It is not on Fort Knox's published 2026 event calendar.

We went through the fort's own event list. The Halloween-season events there are a Wizarding Weekend, guided ghost tours, a scavenger haunt, and a September ghost camp. Fright at the Fort isn't among them.

Two honest caveats. Absence from a calendar is not proof of cancellation — it may simply not be posted yet, and we've recorded its status as unknown rather than closed. And the fort clearly still runs Halloween programming; it just looks different this year.

But here's the thing worth knowing: several pages currently list October 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27 as this year's Fright at the Fort dates. In 2026 those fall on Mondays and Tuesdays. They line up perfectly with weekends in 2018. That's an eight-year-old schedule being recycled forward, and it's the clearest example we've found of how stale data propagates through this category.

The four events that are confirmed

Fort Knox Ghost Camp — September 19–20. An overnight paranormal investigation inside the fort. This is the serious one, it runs before the October crush, and an overnight in a granite fort is a genuinely different proposition from a walk-through.

Wizarding Weekend at the Fort — from October 10. Listed with multiple dates.

Ghosts of Fort Knox Guided Tours — October 10. There's also an August 8 date if you can't wait, which is worth knowing — an August ghost tour has no competition whatsoever.

Frightful Scavenger Haunt at the Fort — October 17. A hunt through the fort's passages, and the family-friendly option.

If you want a guided scare without a haunted house, Portland's Old Port ghost walks run through October, two hours down the coast.

The fort doesn't publish per-event pricing in its calendar listings; each event has its own RSVP or ticket page.

Nightmare on the Ridge, Auburn — real 2026 dates, on sale now

The haunted trail at Wallingford's Orchard on Perkins Ridge is selling timed $30 entry slots for October 2026 — we read slots for October 2, 16, and 23 directly off the ticket page, and all three fall on Fridays in this year's calendar, which is how you know it isn't last season's schedule left up. VIP tickets exist for busy nights.

That makes it the first traditional haunt in Maine with verified current-year dates, and between it and the fort's events, Maine is quietly ahead of most of New England on announcements.

Why the fort works

Fort Knox was built from granite in the mid-1800s to defend the Penobscot against a British attack that never came. It's enormous, it's dark, and it is full of passages, casemates, and spiral staircases that go nowhere useful.

It has never seen combat. Nobody died storming it. Whatever people report in there has to be accounted for some other way — which is a more interesting starting point than a building with a body count, and the good guides know it.

It sits beside the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, so you can go up the tower in daylight and into the fort after dark.

If you need certainty

Maine's confirmed dates are all single events with limited capacity, so book rather than turn up.

For a bigger commercial haunt you're crossing a border: Fright Kingdom in Nashua has published its full 2026 season. Though with Nightmare on the Ridge's October slots on sale, Maine no longer strictly needs the border crossing for a bookable night.
